Are National ID Cards A Good Idea?
Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani vowed Tuesday to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the United States by closely tracking visitors to the country and beefing up border security.
"We can end illegal immigration. I promise you, we can end illegal immigration," the former New York mayor said at a community center _ the first of the day's two stops in this early voting state.
Giuliani's plan would require a uniform identification card for foreign workers and students. A central database would be created to track the legal status of visitors to the country. According to Mr. Giuliani, some 12 million immigrants have entered the country illegally.
"That's a lot of people to walk over your border without being identified," he said.
The presidential hopeful wants a tamperproof ID card that would include fingerprinting for everyone entering the country and a the ability to track when they leave utilizing a central database.
The idea of an ID card and other immigration proposals have been part of Giuliani's campaign speeches for several months. He says the pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants would include identifying themselves as illegal, learn English and then go to the back of the line to apply.
In recent days, rival Mitt Romney, has repeatedly criticized Giuliani, arguing that he supported illegal immigration when he was mayor. Giuliani rejected the charge.
Romney says that Giuliani "instructed city workers not to provide information to the federal government that would allow them to enforce the law. New York City was the poster child for sanctuary cities in the country."
But New York has never officially declared itself a "sanctuary city." Last month, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg told Congress that the city protects residents' confidentiality when they report a crime or seek medical care or education _ a local policy that dates to 1988.
Giuliani defended and supported that executive order while mayor.
It is no secret that Bloomberg has said repeatedly that immigrants are important contributors to the city's economy and crucial to the city's survival. When asked about the idea of New York City as a sanctuary for immigrants, Bloomberg said, "let 'em come."
"I can't think of any laboratory that shows better why you need a stream of immigrants than New York City," he added. "I don't know what to tell anybody. They just _ if they don't believe that immigrants add a heck of a lot more than they cost, they just aren't looking at the numbers."
In response to Romney last week, Giuliani said New York "had the least amount of illegality per capita of any major city in the country and I brought that change about."
Giuliani vowed to a South Carolina crowd that he would continue construction of a border fence, deport any illegal alien who commits a felony and propose that all immigrants who want to become citizens learn English.
Both Giuliani and Romney opposed the bipartisan immigration legislation backed by President Bush. Rival Sen. John McCain of Arizona was the only Republican candidate to support the measure.

Mr. Ballentime,
The U.S. already has a national ID program. It's the social security number that is used universally for almost every business, financial, medical, employment, credit and payroll transaction. It's a comprehensive system that is already in place.

I am a police officer outside of the metro Atlanta area. I believe more so than a national ID card that individual states be made to have a standardized form of ID/Drivers License (DL). Currently states issue OLNs (Operator License Numbers) to ID/DL holders and those numbers are stored on each states crime information center database (in Georgia its called GCIC) and on the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. I believe that states, the DOD (military ID), school ID information should all be contained in NCIC. The problem is that the local databases are not standardized causing for the possible misidentification of a subject. (Note: NCIC is also the same database that warrants are listed and that police agencies have access to). Thus if you have the same name, date of birth, eye color, hair color as another person you and you don’t have your ID on your person when in contact with the police (for example a stop and talk, or a traffic stop) you could get arrested if a NCIC or local IC hit shows you “match the description”. You can avoid this by demanding (voting or becoming active) that your states bureau of investigations (most states have them, they are like a state run FBI) petitions NCIC to become standardized. Also petition that your local bureau of investigations crime information have your OLN linked with your photo so that you can be identified quickly and easily. I have contact with numerous people (walk & talk and passengers during traffic stops) and LEGALLY DETAINED them until I can figure out who they are because they cannot produce legal identification. Sometimes they end up have in warrants and going to jail while other times they are “clean” and walk.
Here is the simple solution. GO GET A STATE ID CARD. It only costs $20 in Georgia and all you need is your social security number and certified birth certificate. PARENTS! If you live in Georgia and your child can sign his or her name he/she can get a GA ID card. If the card expires, no problem it’s just expired, the OLN is still active and linked to your name. This $20 investment can keep you and/or your loved one out of the “I got arrested for giving false information because the police couldn’t figure out who I was.” Just my “never to be humble opinion”
REMEMBER
1. To win this game you gotta know its rules
2. The argument of “Your Rights” breed rebellion while the practice of “Your Responsibilities” breed revival.
3. To stay out of trouble don’t get involved in illegal activity
4. See #1 (think about it!)

Needed to add about the illegal aliens. I do not believe that anyone that is illegally in our county should get an ID card. Legal non-residents have passports and can use those to get a state ID if needed (this is the case in GA). But get this…In GA If an illegal alien gets arrested for a DUI he or she gets assigned a GA OLN (suspended of course and cannot be made valid for driving but an OLN the same). Thus in theory he or she after committing a DUI (crime) gets a free OLN then can get a GA ID Only card. Wait! It gets worse. I theory that same person can commit another DUI give false name. Since they are illegal it is hard to track them, and in theory can get another OLN under the alias. Now that subject has an OLN with both names and the photo is on record in GA and can in Theory get a second GA ID Only card. Just something to think about…

I was talking to my cousin the other day about DNA and genetic testing to find your heritage or what tribes you are from in Africa. I told her I wanted to be tested one of these days once I get my finances together and she started yelling at me " I wish I would pay these &*#@ to tell me where they stole me from!!!!" And just that quickly I was enraged at how simply and sweetley the wool can be pulled over our eyes. She said it should be the right of every African forced and stolen here in America to have that information. I think that she is right and I also think this is worth a fight because we are the main ones who are targeted for this test because we are the main people who do not know where we are from. And it should be our right to know and every African stolen to America should be refunded if they already paid. Please Mr. Ballentine tell me we have a case here worth fighting for by responding and letting me know what we should do next.
